Flextime is considered an alternative commuting strategy because it can make it easier for employees to make rideshare and transit arrangements. Although flextime by itself does not result in a reduced commute trip, it can encourage use of other commuting alternatives that do reduce trips. In addition, this program may shift employee commute travel to off-peak times, or spread the peak, making it easier for the employee and better for the employer.
Some employers have formal flextime programs where employees have certain core hours when all employees are working. Then the employees can decide their own start and stop times, within certain limits. The best way to use a flextime program to encourage participation in a Commuter Choice program is to offer it to those employees who participate in the program by not driving alone to work. Before implementing a flextime program, coordinate with several departments including Human Resources and any union groups that may be represented at the worksite.
