Freight Analysis Framework (FAF) Network - Version 4
vector digital data
www.bts.gov
The spatial component of the FAF network is derived from Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) Geospatial submittal for the year 2012 and contains state primary and secondary roads, National Highway System (NHS), National Network (NN) and several intermodal connectors as appropriate for the freight network modeling. The network consists of over 446,142 miles of equivalent road mileage. The data set covers the 48 contiguous States plus the District of Columbia, Alaska, and Hawaii. The nominal scale of the data set is 1:10,000 with a maximal positional error of ±5 meters.

"Freight Analysis Framework Network Machine Readable Data Files" were prepared by the Federal Highway Administration Office of Freight Management and Operations, Washington DC, 2013 The freight assignment, capacity analysis and modeling portions of "FAF Network" are developed by Maks Inc. in under a contract from Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), Columbus, OH.
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Version 6.1 (Build 7601) Service Pack 1; Esri ArcGIS 10.2.2.3552
The FAF network retains NHPN Version 2014.12 attribute fields of STFIPS, CTFIPS, SIGN1, SIGNT1, SIGNN1, SIGNQ1, LNAME, MILES, STATUS, NHS. All other fields listed in the NHPN Version 2014.11 metadata are dropped. The accuracy of these fields is consistent with Version 2014.12 except the MILES attribute values. The accuracy of field "MILES" is unverified and may have distorted during modification of the network for modeling purpose. New fields added to FAF network are, ID, LENGTH,URBAN_CODE DIR, NN, TRK_RTE and LCV_TYPE, NFN. The field "ID" is used to join the freight modeling algorithm variables for assignment as well as assignment outputs for thematic display purpose. The mileage reported in the field "LENGTH" is based on great circle distance.
All node and link topological relationships and uniqueness of entity IDs are verified by computer algorithm.
The completed FAF network was delivered to the FHWA on September 2016.
As reported in the NHPN Version 2014.12 metadata, the elements of the FAF have been conflated to the using the HPMS geospatial data submitted by the state and which maintains a nominal accuracy of at least ±5 meters.

Rural/Urban Code
FHWA
Code ‘99998’ for small urban sections and ‘99999’ for rural area sections. A small urban area is derived from Census Urban Clusters or Places that are not located within an urbanized area, with a population of at least 5,000. Appendix I lists the U.S. Census Urban Area Codes that are currently in use. FHWA may issue interim guidance when Urban Codes change. This Data Item must also be reported for all ramp sections contained within grade separated interchanges. A Census Urbanized Area can be expanded for transportation purposes. This Adjusted Urbanized
Area, once approved by FHWA, must be identified using the Census Urban Area Code for the Urbanized Area that it was based upon. Contiguous Urbanized Areas can be merged into one FHWA approved Urbanized Area. The combined area must be identified by the Urbanized Area code that was assigned to the largest (population) of the original Urbanized Areas that it was derived from.FHWA
