Title:

An Automated Snowblower for Highway Winter Operations

Abstract:

In 2000, the Advanced Highway Maintenance and Construction Technology Center (AHMCT) at University of California Davis, PATH and Caltrans started a pooled fund study, "Development of the Advanced Rotary Plow (ARP) for Snow Removal Operations," with Nevada and Alaska's DOT as partners. The first prototype system was ready for trial on March 2002. On October 15, 2003, Caltrans conducted an ARP ride-along Demonstration to more than 30 stakeholders from 3 states at Kingvale using a simulated guardrail under various operational scenarios for over 3 hours. All participants were impressed by the performance. Full winter field operational tests are anticipated during winter 2004/2005.
