Project - COLORADO: HOT Lanes on I-25/US 36 in Denver
The I-25 Bus/HOV lanes, also known as Downtown Express lanes, consists of a two-lane barrier-separated reversible facility in the median of I-25 between downtown Denver and 70th Avenue, a distance of 6.6 miles. In 2002 & 2003, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) received $2,800,000 toward its request for $4 million in Federal funds for implementation of the project. The project began tolling June 2, 2006

Operational Status
The number of vehicles paying a toll to travel in the I-25 Express Lanes has stabilized for the past two years. During the weekdays of June 2010 nearly 300,000 trips were recorded in the lanes. Approximately 1/3 of users were toll paying customers while 2/3 were bus or HOV users. An average of 2000 toll-paying vehicles used the lanes in the morning peak period and an average of 1700 toll-paying vehicles used the lanes in the afternoon peak period. HOV usage is down from the previous year and SOV (toll paying customers) have increased from the previous year. Enforcement hours have increased so it may not be an actual decline of carpooling, rather a lower number of "cheaters" in the HOV lane.
