Description The United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a new federal motor vehicle safety standard to require electronic stability control (ESC) systems on large commercial trucks, motorcoaches, and other large buses. NHTSA has previously required a similar system on all passenger cars and light-duty trucks manufactured on or after model year 2012. Researchers have found that an ESC system is currently the most effective tool to prevent heavy vehicles from rolling over or losing control. ESC systems can prevent up to 56 percent of rollover crashes each year as well as up to 14 percent of loss-of-control crashes
