Description	This research summary has been published by the Transport Research Knowledge Centre. The purpose of this summary is to focus on freight transportation and provide a review of the results of completed European research projects. There are two components to this summary. The first component is an overview of the scope of freight transportation and it summarizes the main policy developments at the European Union level. The second component of this summary contains a synthesis of major findings and policy implications from research projects and indentifies the implications for further research. The projects for which this summary covers are projects which were funded by the European Union and which have publicly available results.
